Edwin F. Taylor received his A. B. degree from Oberlin College and his Ph.D. degree in physics from Harvard University. He has spent most of his professional life in the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has written texts in introductory mechanics, quantum mechanics (with A. P. French), and special and general relativity (with John Archibald Wheeler).

He was Editor of the American Journal of Physics. With MIT students, with Paul Horwitz, and with Slavomir Tuleja he has written award-winning educational software to help students manipulate the predictions of relativity and quantum mechanics.

Taylor received the Oersted Medal, the highest award of the American Association of Physics Teachers, "for notable contributions to the teaching of physics."
